The estate is situated in the countryside of the Portuguese Alentejo region, 5 minutes from the village of Azaruja, São Bento do Mato (5 km), which has a small supermarket. Famous for its gorgeous landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and exceptional hospitality, the Alentejo region is one of Portugal's most enchanting destinations. Conveniently located just over an hour's drive from Lisbon Airport, Évora serves as the gateway to this exceptional part of the country. The region offers a diverse range of cultural experiences, from exploring historic towns such as Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to immersing oneself in the medieval ambiance of Estremoz or the artisanal traditions of Arraiolos.
The city of Évora is 18 km away. Évora, whose history dates back to Roman times, flourished when it became the residence of the Portuguese royal family in the 15th century. This contributed to its development and cultural significance in the centuries that followed. It was thanks to its long history and exemplary city centre that Évora was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. The best way to explore the city is on foot, through the narrow medieval streets lined with low whitewashed houses. You will appreciate the Manueline architectural style with its impressive ornaments on portals, windows, columns, arcades, and maritime motifs in the form of anchors, reminiscent of Portugal's maritime history.
The Alentejo region has a rich heritage of traditional arts and crafts. Artisanal skills and traditions are passed from generation to generation. During the Moorish occupation, crafts such as pottery, jewelry making, basketry, and leather working for producing saddles, bags, shoes, and boots flourished. Arraiolos (27 km) is a small village famous for its handmade carpets. You can visit carpet shops and climb the hill to enjoy the view over the castle of Arraiolos. In Nossa Sra. de Machede (25 km), you can still visit small leather processing factories.
Estremoz (40 km) is a significant border town in the Alentejo. The streets and squares in the historic village are lined with crystalline rock (quarried from local quarries). A walk to the white castle in the upper town should be on your list, as well as a visit to Estremoz market, one of the best in the country.
The medieval village of Monsaraz (62 km) has perfectly preserved its authentic charm! With its small streets, bright white houses, old walls, and wonderful castle (which stands on the highest point), it seems as if you have stepped back in time. The capital, Lisbon (approximately 1.5 hours away), is also an ideal destination for a day trip. From Évora, there is also a direct bus to Lisbon.
The Alentejo is also a paradise for gastronomy and wine lovers. Taste traditional dishes such as migas, bread soup, and black pork, ideally paired with the region's robust, local wines. For wine lovers, the Alentejo vineyards offer exclusive tastings, each glass revealing the unique terroir and flavours of this outstanding land.
