Description

  • 5 bedrooms

  • Beachfront

The masterpiece of a famous Greek architect, this carefully designed villa towers with disarming serenity from its seafront setting, a natural extension of the landscape topped with low-lying grasses and aromatic shrubs. This feeling of natural harmony is further increased by the 16m-long infinity pool and the sea, the first being an homage to the irresistible shining blues of the second.

From a sheltered walled courtyard, the main entrance opens into a generous and cozy open-plan communal area, including a tailor-made dining table (whose design is echoed throughout the house in all the wooden furniture and fittings), and a huge, sandy-colored L-shaped sofa. A perpendicular pair of wall-to-wall sliding glass pocket doors fully open allowing the space to seamlessly flow onto the gardens and the terraces, creating a pleasant unity between indoor and outdoor areas, and bringing in light, sea breezes, and views of the gardens, the pool and the Aegean. With its polished creamy flooring and smooth color scheme, this space is filled with a gentle aureate glow at sunrise and in the late afternoon.

To the right of the sofa is a stylish, fully-fitted modern kitchen with a central breakfast bar/island, and, accessed via a separate hallway, a guest bathroom with a shower.

A short glazed corridor leads from near the dining table to the bedrooms. As in the living area, all the bedrooms boast wall-to-wall sliding pocket glass doors, allowing them to connect harmoniously with the surrounding terraces and gardens. In total, the villa offers five bedrooms.

The master bedroom is a spacious double (180 × 220) with an en-suite shower room and attractive sea and garden views. A good-sized double/twin bedroom 2 (90/180 × 210) has an en-suite shower room and lovely pool and sea views. Double bedroom 3 (180 × 220) with en-suite shower room has access to the walled courtyard outside the main entrance. A peaceful double bedroom 4 (160 × 200) features an en-suite shower room facing and accessing a secluded courtyard garden. Bedroom 5, accessed externally, is a generous double (160 × 200) with a feature stone wall, an en-suite shower room, and sea and garden views.

The gardens and terraces surrounding the villa ideally lend themselves to a comfortable and carefree alfresco living. Most outdoor action takes place on the sea-facing side of the property, which, like the roofs, is planted with fragrant shrubs and decorative grasses. To one side, a clutch of olive and other trees delimits gardens from the rocky coastal terrain. Spread out around the garden, and connecting the living area with the fabulous L-shaped sea-view infinity pool (16 × 5), is a large terrace equipped with sunloungers.

Next to the pool, is a long, wonderfully furnished shaded living and dining area, served by an amazing summer kitchen with barbecue and wood-fired oven. From here, a wooden boardwalk extends down to a charming belvedere seemingly suspended above the tempting blue sea. The views from here are arguably the best, and for many guests, this will be the favorite spot to relax, sunbathe, and admire the sea. Furthermore, there is a worthy rival just below: a stone path at the far end of the pool leads to some steps and down to a small pebbly cove. Here, between the rocks, you will find a wooden bathing platform, a few sun loungers, and easy access to the crystalline waters of the Aegean.

The shady walled courtyard accessed from the living and dining area and one of the bedrooms, is a superb addition to the sun-kissed terraces facing the sea. Emerald green banana tree fronds and towering decorative grass sway gently in the breeze, and a large L-shaped sofa promises comfortable rest.

Finally, on the other side of the house, accessed from the fourth bedroom and the gardens, is another walled courtyard with built-in cushioned sofas. Sheltered by a shade-giving, aromatic Mediterranean pine, it has a pleasant, sleepy ambiance, so when it's time for an afternoon nap, this might be the perfect spot.

The villa is nestled on the south coast of Syros between the tiny seafront villages and beaches of Megalos Gialos (1.5km to the west) and Varis (just over 2.5km to the east). Both offer a couple of tavernas and a minimarket. Picturesque Syros was once an important commercial center, a bridge between Asia Minor and the western Mediterranean. Its capital, the busy port of Hermoupolis, was founded in the 1820s during the Greek War of Independence and named after Hermes, the Greek god of commerce.

Hermoupolis prospered as its status as a lively hub for trade and shipping grew. Merchants and entrepreneurs transformed the town into a highly sought-after place to live and do business. Wealthy traders and the upper classes built elegant homes and magnificent neo-classical civic buildings, many of which survive today, such as the town hall on the main square and the Apollo Municipal Theatre, a mini replica of La Scala di Milano. Towering around the harbor, houses climb up two hills, each with an impressive church on the top - one catholic, Agios Georgios, and one Greek Orthodox, the Resurrection of Christ. It's a charming, historic town with an important industrial heritage, abundance of things to see and do, and a good array of cafés, bars, restaurants, and shops.

Today, Syros is considered the capital of the Cyclades and it's a desirable destination for families and those looking for a relaxed ambience free from mass tourism. There are many charming beaches scattered around the coast, particularly in the south close to the villa. Apart from Megas Gialos and Varis (mentioned at the beginning), these include Komito, Posidonia and Agathopes in the southwest, Galissa on the west coast, and Azolimnos and Fokiotripes in the southeast. All are within a 15-minute drive.
