Normandy offers something for everyone from D-day beaches and historical sites, to cultural sites such as Claude Monet’s Giverny Gardens, the Bayeux Tapestries to lovely villages such as Sainte Mere Eglise, Mont St. Michel, and Honfleur.
Normandy is famous for its cuisine especially seafood and veal dishes, cheeses such as Pont l’Eveque and Camembert and of course apple brandy “Calvados”. The local markets provide the opportunity to discover and enjoy many of these local treats. The closest market is in Valognes (5 minutes from the chateau) on Fridays, Bricquebec (10 minutes from the chateau) on Mondays.
The chateau is ideally placed for golf lovers as it is only a short distance from 5 different golf courses each offering an enticing uniqueness.
The estate has a really unique and inspiring history that includes the Gallo Roman period and the pre-Carolingian period. It is however the most recent events that played an important role in European and world history. On June 26, 1944 the only peace treaty signed between the Germans and Americans at the end of World War II, The Surrender of Cherbourg was signed by General Karl Wilhelm von Schlieben and General Joseph Lawton Collins on the bureau of the Drawing Room in the chateau. This is how the chateau received its prestigious nickname of the D’Day Chateau.
Lately the chateau has been recognized by the French Commission of UNESCO for the 70th Anniversary of the Surrender of Cherbourg and it is the symbol of peace in Normandy. The chateau has been in the family of the current owners for 500 years.
