Description

  • 4 bedrooms
  • up to 8 guests
  • 300 m to beach

Nestled on Paros's northeasternmost headland overlooking the astonishing sandy bay and crystal-clear waters of Santa Maria, this beautiful villa is a lovely summer house boasting plenty of space, wonderfully finished, airy interiors, a sense of style, and an inviting ambiance. Outside this oasis, you will find plenty to explore nearby, including picturesque beaches and the enchanting little harbor town Naousa. The property is spread over three levels, each accessed externally.

At the center of the ground level is a spacious and bright L-shaped living area. Stone-flagged flooring combines with pure white walls and ceilings, and lots of windows and French doors with pretty olive green frames and shutters fill the space with light and open out onto the property's wrap-around terraces. These three design features are found throughout the house, creating a delightful uniformity of style.

The longest part of the living area is equipped with a comfy sofa and a coffee table at one end, and a round dining table and chairs to the other. The shorter side of the room, accessed via an arched opening, features a built-in cushioned sofa, a beautiful decorative fireplace, and a TV.

A door at one end of the living room leads into the well-fitted kitchen with lovely, powder blue cabinetry, marble worktops and sink, and a dining area to the far end. Doors on either side of the dining table lead onto terraces, one of which, a serene reed-shaded spot also accessed from the living area, is furnished for dining.

At the other end of the living area, a couple of steps lead up to the ground-level bedrooms. First is a generous double (180 × 200) with an en-suite shower room (with a large walk-in shower), and access to the surrounding terraces. Further along a corridor, past a guest WC, is a double-twin bedroom (90/180 × 200 см) with a stylish en-suite shower room in polished grey cement (a feature of all the bathrooms) and a private terrace.

An external flight of steps leads up from the terraces to a rooftop terrace with a fabulous sea view. From here the amazingly bright suite is entered, which includes a living area with a couple of sofa beds (perfect for kids wishing to sleep near their parents), a double bedroom (180 × 200), and a generous bathroom with a large walk-in shower.

The lower ground level accessed via an external staircase from the terraces offers a living room with a couple of sofa beds (100 × 200) and a twin bedroom (90 × 200) with an en-suite shower room (this bedroom is best suited for independent teenagers).

Surrounded by terraces on all sides, the property benefits from a great choice of alfresco living and dining areas, each with its distinct charm. To the front of the house, the living room and kitchen/dining area open onto two shaded spots, one with a dining table and built-in seating, the other furnished for lounging. A few steps from these is the lovely square pool (5 × 5,5), which, like the rest of the front terrace, enjoys views out to the bay and beach of Santa Maria.

On the other side of the house, again accessed via the kitchen and the living room, is a spacious, stone-flagged walled courtyard with white and stone walls, shady trees, bright bougainvillea, a cozy dining area, a built-in barbecue area with sink and work surfaces, and a variety of lounge areas.

Both ground-level bedrooms open out onto terraces, but arguably the best spot is the stunning wide roof terrace surrounding the main bedroom. The views from here are magnificent. Beyond the ground-level terraces, natural gardens spread out, crisscrossed by paths. One of these leads to a gate from where you can walk down a path to the beautiful sandy beach of Mikri Santa Maria.

The villa is located on the northeasternmost headland of Paros just a short walking distance from the beaches of Mikri Santa Maria and Santa Maria (3 and 12 minutes walk respectively), and a trio of tavernas. It is also perfectly set for exploring the north of the island, which has plenty to offer.

For many people, Paros is the most authentic of the Cyclades. As one of the largest, it offers something for everyone, young or old, party-goers or culture enthusiasts. Among its numerous attractions are vibrant little towns, various beaches, world-famous windsurfing spots, gourmet restaurants, calm traditional villages with waterfront fish tavernas, religious, cultural, and historical sites, and a lively nightlife scene.

Due to the comparatively limited distances involved - the island measures less than 25km from north to south - it is easy to explore in a week or two, no matter where you're staying. Its mountainous hinterland, with peaks rising to about 700m, is dotted with the occasional monastery and crisscrossed by old mule tracks. Down to the coast, meanwhile, there is a great choice of lovely sandy beaches and scenic coves, and a day or two spent on a boat exploring these is strongly recommended.

Concerning towns and villages, beautiful Naousa, sleepy Marpissa, and lively Parikia (the capital and main port) are just a 15-, 20- and 25-minute drive away respectively. The first has a little harbor, a maze of narrow streets lined by shops and tavernas, and the remains of a Venetian castle. The second is a white-washed beauty that seems unchanged for centuries. It’s a pleasure to wander through its narrow streets, while a walk up to the monastery of St Anthony on the hill above allows breathtaking views of the island. The third is a lively little town set around a semi-enclosed bay that charms guests with its sandy beaches, numerous bars and tavernas, archaeological museum, and wonderful Byzantine Church.

Just across the bay from Naousa is picturesque Kolimpithres Beach, famous for its crystal-clear waters and exciting rock formations, and for those interested in history, a visit to the Mycenaean Acropolis is a must. Set atop a rocky scarp high above Kolimpithres, it dates back to the 13th century BCE and offers insights into Paros's long history and fabulous views. It takes pretty long to get up there, so you'd better do it in the early morning or late afternoon when it’s not too hot.

Paros's most northern tip, the Monastiri peninsula is also close by. A protected park spread over about 80 hectares of rocky, sculpted hills, secret sandy beaches, walking trails, and undisturbed flora and fauna, it’s a superb day out for nature lovers and hikers with the bonus of an end-of-excursion swim in the sea.

Cultural tours are readily available on Paros, so whether you want to visit Parikia's old town center, the ancient marble quarries, or the unique island of Despotiko, you can immerse yourself easily in the island's history. Kids are well catered for as well, and a visit to the butterfly nature reserve just north of the airport is a good idea. If all that wasn't enough, Antiparos is just a 10-minute ferry ride across the water from nearby Pounta, making a little island hopping eminently possible.
