Villefranche-sur-Mer and its popular bay are located 6km east of Nice and about 13km southwest of Monaco. The old harbour dates back to the 17th century but nautical ties to the area predate the Roman presence in the area. As one of the deepest natural harbors in the Mediterranean Sea, Villefranche attracts lots of tourists who are eager to explore the Riviera coastline. Villefranche-sur-Mer has preserved its historic flair with its port, the bright façades of the Old Town, and its Citadelle. Jean Cocteau, amongst other artists, fell under the spell of this magical place. Swimmers and divers especially adore its beaches lapped by clear waters. The town spreads to the hills surrounding the bay offering gorgeous panoramic views. Three main roads linking Nice to Italy pass through Villefranche and provide stunning views of the coast and surrounding hills.
