The southern Corsica mountains are spotted with stone sheep barns, named bergeries, that once were used as shelters for shepherds and their flocks, and this pretty house is a nostalgic ode to this ancient architectural form. Designed with modern comforts in mind but preserving local heritage style, it is a great example of combining reclaimed materials, traditional know-how, and excellent craftsmanship.
The accommodation is divided between two levels. Upon entering, you will be immediately amazed by the style of the design. Corsican architectural traditions, locally sourced and reclaimed materials, and upcycled elements perfectly match subtle modern detailing. Though each room showcases its own character and flair, a uniformity of style is obvious. The quality of the craftsmanship and finishing is evident, and there’s aesthetic appeal throughout.
The main entrance double doors lead into the living room with a homely, inviting, and cosy ambiance. Wood-beamed ceilings and traditionally patterned tile flooring add special character. The fireplace at the centre is completed with a deep sofa on one side and a stylish armchairson the other.
The living area leads into the lovely kitchen, which features the same tiled flooring, barrel-vaulted ceilings in light creamy color, olive-toned walls, and a green dresser. To one side is a round breakfast table with chairs and a door with access to the pool terrace. To the other side is the main working area, equipped with Smeg appliances and a double sink from above which you may admire the mountain views. The ground level also includes a WC and a laundry room.
The first level houses two bedrooms: a double (160 × 200 cm) with fabulous views out to the Gulf of Valinco and a double-twin (180/90 × 200 cm). Sharing a well-proportioned shower room (no WC), both bedrooms feature reclaimed doors as headboards, the wooden floors and ceilings, which are beautifully contrasted by carefully selected soft furnishings.
Guests will enjoy relaxing outdoors on the charming, decked pool terrace, which boasts exciting vistas over the green hills and, in the distance, the shining sea of the Gulf of Valinco. To one end is a cozy lounge area; in the centre is the lovely swimming pool (8 × 3 m); and at the far end, next to a double sunbed, is a well-shaded summer kitchen and dining area equipped with a plancha grill and a sink.
Perched in the mountains at around 600m above sea level to the northeast of Propriano, the house is surrounded by wild nature. Forested peaks and rocky outcrops provide a real feel of total seclusion, birds of prey wheel in the sky above, and gorgeous panoramas spread over the south coast of Corsica, the Gulf of Valinco, and the glowing Tyrrhenian Sea. The surrounding countryside is a true delight for those who enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and other outdoor activities, and there are plenty of trails to choose from.
The Gulf of Valinco boasts a wide variety of sandy beaches. The closest to the property (all within a 30-minute drive) are in and around Propriano (Plage de Baraci, Capu Laurosu, and Capicciolo). There is a restaurant nearby, in the village of Fozzano (5mins), but for a greater choice of facilities, including restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, and water sports, Propriano is the perfect choice (25mins). Its marina is a lovely place to while away an hour or two, sipping a coffee or dining by the water.
Just a few kilometres from Propriano, at the southwestern tip of the Gulf of Valinco, is Campomoro. The small village with a high Genoese tower above it benefits from a beautiful arc of golden sand, transparent blue waters, and a selection of bars, cafés, and restaurants. It is also a great choice for hiking enthusiasts, with various trails crisscrossing the intact verdant hills that form a headland some 4500m above the sea. The coastline to the west and south of the village offers numerous scenic little bays and small beaches, most of which are only accessible by boat.
Those fond of Corsica's historical heritage should visit the nearby megalithic site of Filitosa. Some 30 minutes away to the south is the panoramically located mediaeval town of Sartène, whose enchanting maze of streets gives an idea of Corsican life away from the coastline. The village of Olmeto, set on a steep forested hill with its bright houses and magical vibe, is well worth a visit.
Just over an hour and a half's drive northwest will take you to Corsica's capital, Ajaccio, the birthplace of the great Napoleon. About 75km to the southeast is Bonifacio, one of Corsica's most dramatically located and impressive towns. Sitting proudly on a high cliff above the sea, it boasts exciting views over to Sardinia and a great choice of restaurants and bars.
